Perspective + Pace = Peace

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” Proverbs 12:25 English Standard Version Bible

As the pandemic continues I keep wanting to write something separate from it. Something with meaning but Covid-19 has so encroached upon our personal lives that I find it nearly impossible to steer clear of it. Plus the fact that I am writing to an audience remaining in the thick of it. Daily forced to deal with this wily unwanted intruder stealing from our time, work, activities and even the foods we can procure, for goodness sake. To be sure, it’s a total global menace.

That being said and off my chest, I decided to examine how my life has changed for the better BECAUSE of the virus:

I now have time to do all the things I thought I might never find time to do like attack a boatload of books I want to read. Currently I am reading THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTOE (since I love the classics) and THE BEST YES (more of a self improvement volume).

Reading expands the mind and horizons of thought. It’s good to surround yourself with all types of literature and read weekly if not daily.

I also have used this time to clean out, declutter and organize storage spaces throughout our home. My husband and I worked on a large area together as well as each tackling our own smaller spaces. Now the trick is to maintain! But even now I get plenty of satisfaction over the way everything looks. That is worth the effort.

A popular and easy pasttime is watching movies. I have always loved spending time in this arena and built up quite a library of favorites on DVD over the years. So I decided to start using this time to re-watch my dearest stories on film. I am totally enjoying those I haven’t watched in years and realizing I have new perspectives on some. For example, “A Walk in the Clouds” starring Keanu Reeves seemed a bit blah when I was younger but having recently shared this flick with my husband, we both savored the story as well as the rich scenery. Check it out.

From 1995

With time on my hands came another change in my perspective. I can appreciate things I once considered uninviting like nature. I have been enjoying nature around me much more these days since I have time to notice. I love snuffling fresh blooms and photographing those I see as I take regular walks. And along with countless others I have been reveling in different bird sightings and learning the call of some like the cardinal which happens to be my husband’s favorite. I never even thought about these things before. Thank You Covid for changing my perspective on nature.

Another area is learning to cook new foods. I enjoy cooking when I have the time which rarely happened in the past. My husband will tell you I am neither a great cook or a bad cook just an inexperienced one for lack of time. But now he certainly has been enjoying my cooking conquests these past few months.

The largest and most important change by far for me is the simple act of slowing down. It may seem simple on first notice but it is a complicated pursuit when examined at a closer look. Most of our 2020 world lived and breathed a daily rat race before the virus emerged. Then things quickly ground down to a complete halt in many areas. It’s a forced SLOW DOWN. One that I needed desperately and do not wish to waste!

This endeavor to slow down has been going on for a good many years, without much progress. Yesterday a close friend exclaimed “Who are you?!? You can’t be Karan!” after I told her my summer was unplanned. I admit it is a new concept for me to have a blank slate stretching far out in front of me but it is also freeing. It’s really a matter of perspective. And I have the freedom to choose to slow my physicality down; what I do, as well as my mindset; what I expect. I have decided to allow this global pandemic to be my generator of tranquility for my soul. Peace sweet peace.

Free to read, cook, down-size, organize, notice, watch and allow the pandemic to do some good in my life by changing my pace and my perspective producing my personal peace.

Shine on. . .

How about you? What positives are you noticing in your own life these days?

Keeping Secret

Isn’t Secret a great name for a brand of deodorant/antiperspirant? Everyone wants to keep their personal sweat and smells secret, don’t they? I know I do. It’s been a great marketing strategy since 1956. Proctor and Gamble researched for 9 years before introducing SECRET first as a cream deodorant/antiperspirant and then a roll-on and later the solid stick. Last year SECRET launched a new line containing essential oils. 64 years of success in the business and still going strong. Apparently the SECRET product is not a secret at all.

The product SECRET was used to hide something considered negative by our society here in the United States. But secrets hide more than just negative things even though that seems to be more common. No matter where you call home, you most likely have a secret or two, some good some bad.

1972
“Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman”

Are you hiding something negative or positive?

Have you ever had a close friend confide in you a deep and terribly juicy secret that they asked you to keep to yourself? How’d you do with that? Did it gnaw at you to tell someone, just one person who you knew you could trust not to repeat it?

Like in the remake of the classic movie The Women from 2008. There’s a scene where two close friends promise to keep a big secret and put it in “the vault” never telling another soul. Minutes later the friend overcome with emotion drops the key to “the vault” to a third friend. The secret is out.

Aren’t we like that sometimes? Our human nature grabs our brains just like in that movie and we blurt out what we know we shouldn’t. We’ve all been there.

“A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” Proverbs 11:13 New International Version

Recently, as in the last eight months, I’ve been keeping a secret from my husband. It has been a frustrating challenge at times to maintain the secret but I have succeeded in protecting the plan of a surprise party for him until now that Covid-19 has all but made a party impossible. This was a good secret. The very best kind of secret.

60 Candle Birthday

These good secrets can be a struggle to keep. I confess I find it hard to keep some good things to myself, like acts of service. You try to do something kind for someone in the Name of Jesus but oh how tempting it is to mention it to someone. Like delivering food or supplies to the elderly during this time of crisis. Or anonymously sending money to someone whose stimulus check has not yet arrived or has lost their job. Or how much time you spend reaching out to others by phone, text or now ZOOM. The list can go on and on.

Even if I defeat the temptation to tell my good secrets to one of my friends or acquaintances, a closer battle yet remains. I have to fight the urge to share whatever I do even with my husband because if I want to be honest, I’m secretly looking for his affirmation and admiration. I want him to see all I am doing for the Lord and be proud of me. Lord have mercy on my sneaky soul.

My self-centered heart needs to find its self worth in the Lord of the universe who loves me. I want to be trustworthy and to mature in Christ so that I need no ones pat on the back but HIS. None of us should covet anyone’s attention except our Lords and He tell us not to keep track of our good works, not even to let our left hand know what our right hand is doing. (Matthew 6:3)

So how good are you at keeping secrets, good ones and bad ones?

“that your charitable deed may be in SECRET; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:4 New King James Version

How about it. . . Are you keeping your secrets or are they keeping you bound somehow?

We will FLURISH more fluidly if we keep all our secrets safe in the hands of our Great God only! Good or bad secrets, we can fully trust Him with all of them.

FINISH, a Challenge to be Met

“Now finish the work, so that you may complete it just as eagerly as you began, according to your means.” II Corinthians 8:11 Berean Study Bible

“Bluntest interpretation, Get with it, and do what you have already promised to do. It is not enough to promise.” Coffman’s commentary

Finish. What does that word mean to you? For me it’s a reminder of all the projects I have laying around started but not completed. There’s the story board in my studio that has just a dozen photos in chronological order and remains a four foot reminder that I need to do more planning and pasting of the story to bring it to completion.

It’s a closet that has neatly folded sweaters on the top shelf on the right and purses and accessories somewhat organized on the shelf on the left. Below the hanging clothes are piles of shoes in disarray. Sneakers overflowing from a bin, winter boots crumpled in the corners and sandals of all colors and shapes strewn haphazardly over the entire floor. It’s a mess. Another project started but not finished.

The word FINISH is a haunting mental kick in the pants to start tying up these loose ends, especially now while COVID-19 affords me extra time.

Dave Kindig of KinDigIt Designs

My husband and I were watching a program called KinDigIt Designs on his latest tv treasure the MotorTrend channel. The show recently held a contest to hire a new employee and 12 contestants were whittled down to two. They were given all sorts of tasks to do from welding parts on to cars to customized fabrication. In the end the winner completed all the tasks in the time allotted while the loser just did not make good use of her time so she did not finish and lost the competition (Yes, it was a woman in a male dominated industry that made it to the final two and she did well except for attitude and mishandled time management).

And so I must invariably ask myself several questions; Do I have a good and realistic attitude toward finishing my project? Am I willing to make the effort and work to accomplish my goal? Am I determined to labor through possible setbacks and make the most of my time? If I can say YES to all three questions then full steam ahead.

But if I am wavering a bit here and there then I need to remind myself I am not failing but have an opportunity to invite the Holy Spirit to help me. That God’s Holy Spirit is ALWAYS available when I am weak. I just have to humbly ask Him to inspire and assist me. He helped Bezalel in Exodus 31:1-3.

So after partnering with the Holy Spirit I know that I need to organize my time and maintain a good attitude to move forward toward finishing especially on the larger, long-term projects. But just knowing is not moving me forward. Having faith in the Holy Spirit’s help is not enough either. Put the faith to work as James encourages in his epistle chapter 2 verse 17.

Elisabeth Elliot

I must DO something. I used to listen to Elisabeth Elliot on the radio years ago and she always said “Do the next thing.” It remains great advice. Just get going on whatever projects you have started. Determine to work on bite size pieces more often if it seems overwhelming but DO SOMETHING. The Spirit will guide you.

Theodore Roosevelt said, “The worst thing you can do is nothing.”

I actually have a notebook that I use to plan and record all the things I have done or accomplished each day of the pandemic. Perhaps that would help you as well? Not only is it motivating, it helps chase away the voice of false guilt that accuses me of wasting time. Now I have recorded proof of production.

So make a plan or list today. Then dive in and do some work. Check things off the list and feel your sense of accomplishment grow. Tomorrow do the same, and the next day etc., steadily working in partnership with the Holy Spirit until you FINISH the task.

FLURISHING will soar and increase in frequency with the more things you actually FINISH.

SOMETHING SPECIAL

“I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and all the earth…. Never again will floodwaters destroy all life.”
Genesis 9:13 & 15b New Living Translation Bible

Our house sat on a hill overlooking Church Street just outside of Reamstown, Pennsylvania. It had a large front porch which we rarely used. Formed of cement the porch ran the length of the original house, which was about twenty feet and had three black steel posts supporting the roof. It was about 8 feet wide and a great spot to play with my big rubber ball I got at the local flea market. Otherwise no one spent much time there, except one summer.

It was a nice looking porch compared to the old wooden side porch that saw all the foot traffic. I never understood why we didn’t use it? Perhaps because the front door leading to the front porch was not situated at a convenient spot in our living room? Most of the time mother had a piece of furniture blocking the front door.

The porch circa 1963
Mother and I

But one summer father moved the furniture so we could use the front door. For the next few days we were in and out of that door so much it was like a swinging saloon door in a Western. It was 1972 and I was nine years old. I didn’t understand what was happening but we sat as a family, all six of us on our front porch and waited.

We ate our meals out there and only went inside to use the bathroom. My parents and the oldest of us were allowed to sit on two crude benches homemade from logs and limbs my father split and built in his workshop in the basement. I preferred sitting on the cement anyway because it felt cool and didn’t cause splinters. The light rain had now started to come faster and harder.

The next three days we sat out most of the time on the porch watching our neighbors yard become a large puddle and then more like a pool. By the third day there was no yard to be seen. Hurricane Agnes had hit Pennsylvania hard. Over 100,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to flooding. Some buildings were under 13 feet of water. Our state had $2.3 billion worth of damage and 50 lives lost.

Market street, downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Sometime near the end of June when the rain stopped, the sun shone like a welcome old friend. And then they appeared… multi-colored arches in the sky. The beautiful streaks stirred my soul and I knew SOMETHING SPECIAL was happening. It was the first rainbow I’d ever seen. My brothers told me stories of leprechauns and a pot of gold somewhere but it didn’t ring true.

After the water eventually receded and the muds dried up life returned to normal in late July that summer. When Mother shared about the Great Flood in Genesis and the binding promise God made to all generations I finally understood. That SOMETHING SPECIAL was actually something supernatural. Almighty God was allowing us to see a bit of heaven that came with HIS promise. My soul soared believing the Genesis account and my curiosity was satisfied.

Now whenever I see a rainbow, my heart is thrilled and warmed knowing God continues to speak to us poor mortals and remembers His promise.

Stimuli in Crisis?

Natural stimulus

In this day of isolation it is incredibly taxing to find positive stimuli for almost anything including writing. At least I find it difficult. I have to pull myself out of apathy and off the couch to scratch out anything of worth. It’s too easy to lay around and eat my favorite comfort foods and become even more lethargic with an abundance of carbs.

I know I have to determine to better discipline my diet and limit my snacks or at least earn them. I also know I will only experience energy if I move my body and so I coax myself daily to walk inside or outside depending on the weather. I have been hitting 10,000 to 23,000 steps a day which is encouraging and salvages a few shreds of self respect.

However, I am now further challenged by physical issues with my back and recently my hips have joined the chorus of pain. Needless to say I have not been too productive since my body began revolting. But I am not giving up just slowing down as we all must during this time. It gives me a relaxed perspective to be still in His presence and this is never a bad thing.

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.”

Psalm 19:1-4 New Living Translation Bible

I feel the need to add that my sweet husband is HAPPY AS A CLAM since he discovered we actually have a subscription to MotorTrend channel on tv. He can sit and watch for hours with a silly grin on his face. Oh to be so easily entertained. Lord help me!

Magnificent Obsession

The start of things to come?

Read the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-12

“So you must keep watch! For you do not know the day or the hour of MY return.” Matthew 25:13 New Living Translation

How are we Christ Followers faring in light of the ongoing fast moving global changes taking place? Are we afraid? Confused? In denial? Or are we seeing this as an opportunity of outreach and a type of dress rehearsal for things to come?

When I was in junior high I had a friend who told me consistently that I was way TOO SERIOUS. It didn’t do much for my self-esteem, let me tell you. I didn’t want to be the serious one all the time. I longed to be fun loving and free spirited. I wondered for years what the heck was wrong with me? It plagued my mind more than I can remember.

But as we find ourselves in the midst of this Corona Virus epidemic I wonder if there is a strange and wonderful connection for me? Maybe my seriousness was preparation for things to come? Perhaps for you as well? Look back at your own journey with Jesus. . .

Exposed early in my life to the truths of scripture, I accepted Jesus into my heart at age seven. I had a keen interest in the “End Times” especially, and regularly scanned the skies for the return of Jesus in the clouds. In grade school concern grew for my classmates who seemed completely unaware of what the Bible foretold was on the horizon. I invited them to evangelistic services whenever I had the chance and prayed seeds of truth would grow in their hearts.

It was hard when some refused to come. They seemed so oblivious to what I thought and believed were signs all around us. Clear to me because the Holy Spirit reveals truth but hidden to them.

When at school or with my cousins playing at home it didn’t matter what we were doing or how much fun we were having. I could never quite detach my mind from the underlying truth of what I knew was coming. What was this all consuming truth? It SEEMED to cast a shadow on my fun and I didn’t like it. But the importance of this mysterious truth outweighed my discomfort.

So I began sharing myself what I knew about Jesus and the end times with kids who were never taught the Bible whether it was in school or with cousins at home. I am sure I was seen as a kook. I just so wanted them to be aware and have a chance to be ready. This was the Holy Spirit at work in my young life.

Prison ministry

As the years passed I began learning more and more about JESUS. I had plenty of opportunities within prisons and workplaces to practice learning to care about the precious souls all around me. I had to care more about them than what they will think of me if I share scriptural truths. It isn’t easy and of course it hurts to be seen as a weirdo and sometimes socially ostracized. But in time the pain hurts less and I know the truth still needs to be shared.

Sharing faith at work

I believe Jesus saves us and desires to teach us how to love others which sometimes hurts. But HE is faithful to help us when we hurt and strengthens our faith if we keep looking to HIM in simple trust. We keep sharing the truth as HE leads us in HIS strength. If we suffer during the process, HE will be with us and give grace to get through it and even grow stronger.

“Instead, be very glad—-for these trials make you partners with Christ in HIS suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing HIS glory when it is revealed to all the world.” I Peter 4:13 New Living Translation

In all of this I have come to realize JESUS is my Magnificent Obsession—- “a strikingly beautiful thought or idea that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind”. I used to think something was wrong with me but now I truly would have it no other way. For I believe with all my heart HE is more than worth every ounce of energy, every form of praise, every waking thought and every act of obedience I can give HIM! May HE strengthen me to remain faithful.

How about you? How is the LORD encouraging you to share HIS truth with the world around you? Some are terrified and need peace. Some are confused and need direction. Some are in denial and need reality. All of us need JESUS whether we realize it or not.

The lost need to know Him and the weak need encouragement. Use whatever gifts HE has given you or developed in you to point others to HIM. Don’t be afraid, share HIS truth. Desire HIM as your Magnificent Obsession and HE will lead you faithfully on the path HE created for you.

“For I know the plans I have for you, ‘says the LORD.’ They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for ME wholeheartedly, you will find ME.” Jeremiah 29:11-13

HE wants to be our MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION!

FLURISHING By Train

Today I am embarking on a solo train excursion from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Providence, Rhode Island. Of course I’m never really alone because JESUS rides with me wherever I go. I fully trust in HIS promise: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 Let the journey with JESUS commence!

On my way

5 am arrived way too soon for this recently retired woman. Along with the alarm came two simultaneous leg cramps forcing my mind to immediately dodge thoughts of negativity for what the rest of the day had in store.

Fortunately, I succeeded to rest in the faithfulness of my constant traveling companion rather than give in to the invading fears.

Normally my dear husband travels with me as a third party and I simply follow him around since he is a seasoned traveler. He carries my bags and makes sure I have my ID and tickets ready at the appropriate times. When I travel with Dwight, I am not quite as aware of my need for JESUS.

This happens to all of us when the distractions of everyday living and the concerns of problematic issues flood our minds. This squeezes out our awareness of JESUS’ constant presence. But the fact remains HE IS THERE.

Today will be different for me because I am 100% depending on HIM. Part of me is is sad to leave my Sweetheart behind but another part of me is glad that I must push myself and use my flabby faith muscles as well as physical muscles that have been resting after recent surgery.

I had to say goodbye as I boarded the train while Dwight stood on the platform watching and waving. I know we will miss each other. But I also know Jesus will comfort each of us during our time of separation.

Bittersweet goodbye

I must commend my husband as he never stands in my way when adventure calls. He knows I must follow wherever God leads and he does everything he can to assist me for a smooth transition into the unknown. I am so incredibly grateful as I think about this while cruising in the gentle rocking train car.

The first leg of today’s journey was a 78 minute ride to Philadelphia. Once on the train it was no problem. The head conductor, a woman, even lifted my suitcase into the overhead compartment for me. Surprising but extremely appreciated.

(As a side note) There was only one small irritation when I asked about the restroom. Specifically at which end of the train it was located. The assistant conductor looked at me and said, ‘it’s at the other end like the sign says.’ I said there are two ends from this point and he just shook his head and said yes when I pointed to the end behind me. The sign should have read RESTROOMS LOCATED BEHIND YOU.

This incident reminded me of my former position as a Fare Collector and how people traveling on the Turnpike would constantly be confused by Turnpike signage.

I always tried to be cognizant of this when I was working and realize we do not all see things the same way, even simple signs. Being kind and helpful to those who are unfamiliar with your system goes a long way in keeping people calm and headed in the right direction physically as well as emotionally.☺️

Arriving at 30th Street Station and catching the correct train was my real trepidation. …“Why are you fearful, oh you of little faith?” Matthew 8:26

So often things loom large in our minds and hearts and we get completely off track, (pun definitely intended for my pun loving husband) plunging us into the twilight zone of fear. Lately, I have been proactively refusing to give into fear and today JESUS proved HIS faithfulness again and again.

As I ascended on the escalator, the first thing I saw as I looked up were the big lights resembling bullets suspended from the main station ceiling in Philadelphia. My heart rested quietly in a deep sense of underlying peace as the huge train station opened before me.

It was not crawling with rush hour travelers as I expected and so I easily made my way to the information desk to check which gate I needed to enter to catch my next train north.

The gentleman kindly showed me exactly where I needed to go. So off I went to find a seat and enjoy my second breakfast, grateful for his kindness.

At this point I am now safely on my way for a 5 hour ride to Rhode Island… gonna sit back and take it all in for now.

Dwight and JESUS may even be having their own adventures while I am gone, in fact, I know they will.

Any true follower of JESUS can have adventures with HIM as often as they desire it and look for HIM in their daily lives.

Today don’t let fear prevent you from living an adventurous life. Wherever you find yourself and whatever you are facing: Look to Jesus and Mark 11:22.

Stuffed Jesus: the Final Tale from the Booth

A few weeks ago a customer pulled up to my booth in a small beat up sedan. A young woman with long medium brown hair smiled as she handed me her ticket for processing. I noticed she had something attached to her seat belt which was properly strapped across her chest.

A few years ago this was quite popular to have stuffed animal straps on your seat belt to soften the tug across your chest but I hadn’t seen it lately and this one looked like a doll.

She paid her fare, said a nice greeting and pulled out of the lane. I didn’t think much of it. (As an aside: State Troopers do traffic checks at our interchange sporadically but especially this time of year as Thanksgiving approaches. Thanksgiving week is the biggest travel week of the year here in the States. So be on guard and wear your seat belt). Consider yourself warned.

Less than two weeks later the same woman pulls up again and this time I can clearly see the doll on her seat belt is a man in a long robe… with a beard! Oh my goodness, she is wearing a “stuffed JESUS” I thought to myself.

Today she seemed a bit frazzled although still kind as she gave me her ticket.

“Hope you’re havin a good day,” I said as cheery as I could.

“Things are rough lately So I take Jesus with me everywhere,” she said matter of factly while simultaneously pulling the stuffed Jesus doll out from under her seatbelt. She waved him around and smiled.

I handed her the change and a receipt and said, “well you and Jesus have a good day together.”

“We will,” she said as she shoved the poor jesus back down under her seat belt and drove off into the sunset.

I stood there a minute shaking my head wondering what I just witnessed? Did this dear woman really believe that this stuffed doll strapped across her body actually had some divine power to protect and help her? I am afraid she believed it with all her heart and my heart ached for her now, all former amusement disintegrating into empathy.

The Bible is clear from the gitgo in the Ten Commandments EXODUS 20:4&5a:

“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.”

My customer was so close and yet so far from the truth at the same time. Jesus desires to be with us always 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But HE is alive. HE is not a doll. HE is seated on the throne in heaven next to God the Father. (Romans 8:34) HE lives in our hearts through the Holy Spirit of God giving each of us who trust in Him as Savior access to all His love and provision. (Ezekiel 36:27 and I Corinthians 3:16)

So I pray my customer will hear the truth this holiday season and be set free from the lie that a stuffed jesus can do anymore than create some padding on her seat belt.

How about you… What are you living for? What is your mind focused on the most? Are you subconsciously worshipping any false gods like money? Leisure? Wine? A person or persons?

Give it some thought and reflection this week as we enter the holiday season. Each of us can slip into a distracted state bordering on idolatry if left unchecked. Keep Jesus front and center in your heart!

Happy Thanksgiving and travel safe as you FLURISH into the season celebrating our Saviors birth!

Tattoo of Youth

What is it that keeps us young? Do you have a desire to stay young? If so, how does that look for you?

Last year I had an especially lively older couple pull up to my booth. First thing out of the man’s mouth was; “A woman is as old as she feels. A man is not old ‘til he quits feeling.”
My look of bewilderment urged the woman to tell me more of their thoughts. She said, “When he was 55 I told my husband here,” as she flicked her thumb towards the man, “to get his ear pierced so he’d look young and sexy.”

Awkwardness replaced bewilderment as I tried to play along with their enthusiasm for their perception of their own youthfulness. She continued by asking me, “How old do you think he is?”

Don’t you just hate it when someone asks that question? Instant uncomfortableness sinks into the pit of your stomach as you wonder how to answer.

I thought he looked at least 70 but figured I better humor them a bit so I answered 65. She snickered and said “Nope! He’s 78 years young.” Her smile widened with satisfaction.

Maybe the earring thing worked for this woman with her husband? Personally I don’t like outward fads such as earrings, tattoos or ‘man buns’. I like a more natural approach to maintaining youthfulness in men or in women. Healthy skin and a big smile are attractive to me.

Too often outward trends adorn a heart in hopes of covering up insecurity of some sort or pretension. If that’s the case, then I don’t see it as youthfulness but rather a sad deception.

On the other hand, if a vibrant, healthy soul exudes from a body with tattoos and piercings I am much more inclined to see and appreciate it as genuine youthfulness. I believe age is maintained in the heart and mind first and sometimes it spills over into our wardrobes, skin and hair.

My goal is to maintain a young at heart attitude no matter my age or how I look. Quite the challenge at times when the body is dragging. Some days are easier than others but I keep coming back to my goal and press on in that direction with whatever strength God has given me that day.

Again, do you desire to stay young? Look on the inside first.
“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘ Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but The LORD looks at the heart.”

Good Rich?

Today on my way to work I happened to glance over at a local antique market my husband enjoys. In the window a large BFGoodrich sign caught my attention. The name intrigued me. Of course it was familiar but I really knew nothing about the name or the company.

The BFGoodrich company was founded 149 years ago in 1870 by Benjamin Franklin Goodrich. Originally part of the industrial conglomerate Goodrich corporation, this American tire company was the first to manufacture radial tires.

The BFGoodrich name became a household word after 1903 when Henry Ford chose to fit his model A with BFGoodrich tires and this car was the first to cross the US from east coast to west coast.

More fame attached itself to BFGoodrich after their tires were fitted onto Charles Lindbergh’s famous airplane, the “Spirit of St. Louis” which was the first plane to fly non-stop across the Atlantic successfully.

The company continues on but is now owned by Michelin since 1990.

Goodrich is an interesting name by itself. I wonder about how it came about? Is there an opposing Badrich name? In fact, there is, but currently only about 10 people bear this name worldwide. Who knew?

So I began wondering if the name originated from a man who was good and rich or a man who was both a good man and a rich man? In other words, a man who knew how to use his wealth for good.

Benjamin Franklin Goodrich seems to have been a good man who later became wealthy. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle. He graduated from medical school and then studied surgery. Later he served as a battlefront surgeon in the Union army during the Civil War. His medical practice struggled after the war so he turned his attention to industry.

Legend has it that he witnessed a friends house burn down in winter because the firemans’ leather hoses froze up and cracked. Mr. Goodrich wanted to do something about that and began producing hoses made of materials that would work in all weather. Eventually rubber entered the equation and the rest is history as the company expanded into the tire industry.

Wealth is a slippery blessing. We must be careful how we use it and make no mistake, it’s not easy to be both a good man and a rich man. Jesus Himself says, “I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I’ll say it again, —it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:23+24 New Living Translation

We see Jesus said it two different ways in this passage in Matthew for emphasis. Luke and Mark also record this same thought. We need to pay attention. It is difficult for the wealthy to be good because with wealth comes more temptations to develop nasty traits in direct opposition of Godly goodness.

 Self-reliance

 Pride

 Greed

All three are evils that tend to grow and never diminish. All three of them keep us from God. The trick then is to initiate the process of Christlike qualities and character as soon as one becomes a Christ follower so we can learn early on how to properly handle the gifts and wealth He gives us.

By global standards every American is rich. I ask myself, “Am I Good Rich?” What am I doing with my money to help others and further the Gospel in my personal everyday life here at home and abroad? It’s a question I must ask regularly  and answer according to His guidance to be found as a good steward of the Lord’s wealth graciously bestowed upon me.
